The old ways...

I have used a few really old instructional books to get back into my drawing and sketching. I think I'm most drawn (no pun intended), to them as this was how I was taught to draw people and I find revisiting these styles and relearning them strangely comforting.

I imagine some people look at my people studies and find them quite old-fashioned and perhaps a little too fussy, or too simple, but it has always been the way I have drawn and I personally love the style.

As an artist and largely self taught, my mum has a wealth of these wonderful old books and is always lending them to me. The latest one is on nudes and I love leafing through the pages to see the different medium the artist uses and how he tailors it to the model, the sitting and even his page size. There is even advice on how to instruct your model and allowance for breaks and marking poses so the model can reposition themselves. It's a great book and it really makes you want to sketch.
